Clinician Information > Pain Education

The priority given to pain management varies greatly between countries. In France it has a high priority under the law regarding patient's rights and it is also a part of the curriculum of all health professionals. The university hospitals routinely assess patient's pain levels along with blood pressure and other vital checks. The JCAHO accredited hospitals in the USA also adhere to the latter checks. Portugal has adopted pain as the 5th vital sign.

The following presentation was made by Eloise Carr ( Pain Education SIG) at the AfPPCongress in Harrogate, October 2008. Her presentation address the barriers to managing pain.

Background

Pain features to varying degrees in the undergraduate and postgraduate training of most healthcare professionals in the UK and there has been a growing interest in promoting education in pain within these different professional groups. The International Association for the Study of Pain has produced Core Curricula for different professional groups and it has just published the 3rd Edition of the Core Curriculum for Professional Education in Pain. The British Pain Society is active in providing a range of educational activities including the Annual Scientific Meeting, study days, seminars and publications. Many Special Interest Groups cite education as a key focus of their work. There is however, no place for those endeavouring to deliver pain education to come together more formally to share their experiences and improve education. Following the success of two educational workshops (ASM 2005, 2006) a Special Interest Group in Pain Education has been established. The SIG held its’ inaugural business meeting at the British Pain Society ASM in Glasgow in April 2007. It was attended by more than 40 delegates. A great deal of discussion and ideas emerged about how the SIG might take forward work to meet its aims and objectives. Several working groups were set up and include; pre-registration pain education, continuing professional development, website development and educational methods. The SIG hopes to run workshops at the ASM in Liverpool in 2008.
