Graduate student researcher (who is also a chronic pelvic pain patient) seeks study participants for a pilot study on positive emotions and spirituality among female chronic pelvic pain patients. The criteria for being enrolled in the pilot study are:

1- At least two months since clinical diagnosis of chronic pelvic pain
and
2- English speaking

Pilot study participants will be asked to fill out three surveys, which will take approximately 15 minutes in total to complete. Amazon website certificates of $10 will be offered to study participants as compensation for their time.

To enroll in this pilot study, contact Erica Hamilton at: ericahamilt@gmail.com or 1-415-690-5818.

Health services for women with chronic pelvic pain- Stones RW, Price C J R Soc Med 2002; 95:531-535

Information about women referred to British pain clinics for chronic pelvic pain is available from the Pain Society's PACS database. Figure 3 shows a comparison of treatments provided to all patients and to women with pelvic pain. Brief Pain Inventory pain scores were similar to those in the general pain clinic population but the range of treatments offered to women with chronic pelvic pain was very different.

A randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover design to study the effect of amitriptyline on pain-related brain activation in patients with IBS using fMRI emphasizes the significant role of stress in IBS. Morgan V et al “Amitriptyline reduces rectal pain related activation of the anterior cingulate cortex in patients with irritable bowel syndrome.“ Gut 2005

An fMRI study of female patients with fibromyalgia supported the well known association between clinical pain and severity of depressive symptoms. The study emphasises the usefulness of fMRI in separating the different components of the pain experience and complementing the patients report of pain.
